AT THE HAWK'S WELL
AT THE HAWK'S WELL was developed in August 2013 as a part of The Hamilton Project, produced by the Mohawk Arts Collective.
For five years, the Mohawk Arts Collective has run a residency program out of a converted barn space on Mount Desert Island in Maine. 20 artists lived and worked together for eight days, and ended the residency with a public showing of the week's work.
AT THE HAWK'S WELL is a short play by W.B. Yeats. Characters from Irish mythology meet at a well whose waters grant eternal life. Together with theatre director Dan Rogers, clarinetist Byron Asher, performance artist Jenna Horton, and a team of performers from the local community, we built an adaptation of Yeats' play outdoors in an abandoned lot. We gathered materials from the nearby tidal pool and overgrown lot to make masks, costume pieces, and props. We composed a musical score using our trombone, clarinet, fiddle, and Yeats' original song lyrics.
I played the Old Man, a masked character who has waited at the well so long he appears to have grown into his surroundings. I also choreographed dances for the titular Hawk, the mysterious guardian of the well.
HAWK'S WELL was a wild adventure that allowed me to dust off my skills in mask performance, crafting, and dance, all set against the incredible backdrop of Mount Desert Island.
I even ate my first lobster.
It was delicious.
